The Mediterranean Sea is lined with gorgeous beaches sheltered by white cliffs. The best beaches can be found in Italy, Greece, Croatia, and Spain, with spectacular views from rocky promontory above sweeping expanses of white sand. While almost any beach could qualify, here is our top five.
Found in the Aegean Sea (in the northeastern corner of the Mediterranean) is a group of isles with black sand beaches. Santorini is already renowned as one of the best locations in Greece with beautiful villages and unique beaches. The coastal towns are built on the rocky hillsides, like a wedding cake composed of beautiful white houses with blue domes and rustic churches carved into caves. The panoramic views, unique pictures, and warm waters make Santorini one of the best beaches in the Mediterranean.
Ibiza is an island in the Mediterranean off the eastern coast of Spain and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The gorgeous island notorious stomping ground for celebrities looking for both privacy and picturesque surroundings. The turquoise waters and white sand beaches here are reminiscent of the Caribbean while the old port, amazing cuisine, and charming hills have an unmistakably Spanish flavor. Ibiza is known for its hot nightlife venues and world-class accommodations.
Saint-Tropez is part of the famous French Riviera on the shores of the Mediterranean. The vivid blue waters and an impressive fleet of pretty boats makes provide for fun excursions on the water and a great view from the shore. While the location is stunning, temperatures here are quite mild compared to warmer climes like the Aegean, usually peaking in August at around 80° Fahrenheit (26° Celsius). Sirena Bay, Cyprus
Touted by locals rather than tourists, this hidden gem of a beach in the Protaras region of Cyprus is a quiet hideaway in the Eastern Mediterranean. Waters here are almost crystalline and protected from the surf by the arms of the surrounding bay the beach. The beach is quite secluded and has almost no boat traffic. While the beaches won't be empty, but you will find them to be much quieter during the weekdays if that's your speed.
Oludeniz is an especially impressive destination also known for its calm and sheltered waters. The bay has its own lagoon, which is perfect for private swimming and hiking on the surrounding trails. Turkey's beaches make up the eastern portion of the Mediterranean Sea and connect up with the Aegean Sea near Greece. Cerulean waters and sugar-white beaches await at this fantastic spot.
